Hoad Hill and Lighthouse Monument

Back to Self-guided walks

The monument was erected on Hoad Hill in 1850 as a memorial to Sir John Barrow who was born in Ulverston in 1764 and rose to become Second Secretary to the Admiralty. It is a model of The Eddystone Lighthouse but has never had a light. The monument is open to the public whenever a flag is flying (most Summer Sundays and Bank Holidays). Entrance is free and a spiral staircase takes you to the lantern chamber.

This circular route takes you through some of Ulverston’s loveliest back lanes to enter Hoad Hill near Ford Park. On a clear day there are spectacular views from the top. Return is via a good track passing through the “Chinese Walls”.
