Swarthmoor Hall

Back to Self-guided walks

Swarthmoor Hall is situated on the outskirts of the town and is perhaps its most famous building.  Dating from around 1600 it was the home to Judge Fell and his wife Margaret. In 1652 it was visited by George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers). After Judge Fell died Margaret married George Fox and became one of the movements leading lights. She was a strong supporter of women’s rights and has been called the first feminist.

This easy, circular walk also takes in the village of Swarthmoor. The Hall is normally open to visitors and has a small café.
