Plumpton Hall via Canal Foot

Back to Self-guided walks

Plumpton Hall, Ulverston, Cumbria, UK (© Joan Martin, Photo North). A 16th century house with 18th century renovations. One of the early owners was John Sawrey, a Puritan much opposed to George Fox and the Quakers. John was drowned in 1665 while attempting to cross the sands. Legend says that the hall houses a supernatural brass lantern which will always find its own way back to Plumpton Hall.

This short walk adds a circular loop to the popular walk along the canal towpath to Canal Foot. This takes in a scramble along the bay shore limestone rocks (look for fossils) and passes Plumpton Hall, a grade II listed manor house with wonderful round chimneys dating from 17th to 18th centuries. In the event of high tide covering the rocks, the inland deviation can be taken to complete the circuit via Next Ness.

Distance: 3.2 miles (5.2 km)
Ascent: 75ft.  (23m)
